History

Hard Rock is a loud and aggressive form of rock music. This style generally features distorted, and effected electric guitar which is used both as a rhythm instrument (through repetitive riffs) and a lead instrument. Drumming focuses on driving beats, strong bass drum and heavy snare and cymbal use. The bass guitar generally works with the drums to form the backing rhythm of the track. Vocals in hard rock are often raspy, or growling and involve wailing in high ranges or falsetto. Hard rock has been predominantly performed and consumed by men and because of this it emphasizes overt masculinity and sexuality. Unlike heavy metal, hard rock maintained a bluesy rock and roll identity and often had some swing to it. Hard rock developed into a major form of pop music in the 1970's and included bands such as; Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, AC/DC, and Van Halen.

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin is an English Hard Rock band who formed in 1968 as the New Yardbirds, but would later change the name to as we know it today: "Led Zeppelin". The group consisted of Jimmy Page on guitar, Robert Plant on vocals, drummer John Bonham, and John Paul Jones on the bass guitar and keyboard. The bands musical style does not transcend any single music genre however they are generally viewed as a hard/ blues rock act. Their fourth album "Led Zeppelin IV" is considered to be one of the most influential albums ever because it consists of tracks like "Black Dog", "Stairway to Heaven", "Rock and Roll", and "When the Levee Breaks" and this album cemented the band as icons in the music industry. Led Zeppelin disbanded in 1980 following the sudden death of drummer John Bonham and the remaining individual members have pursued solo careers in the years following.

InfluenceLed Zeppelin is considered to be one of the most influential bands in music history. They created a unique style of music that is still uncontested today, and the longevity that their music possesses is impressive to say the least. They were among the first bands to sell out stadiums and they played a factor in creating Stadium Rock. The music of Led Zeppelin has gone on to influence many hard rock and heavy metal groups such as: Queen, Rush, Guns n' Roses, and Dream Theater and they have also influenced modern pop artists such as: Lady Gaga, and Madonna. Their music has also influenced and contributed to the creation of Alternative Rock because bands of this genre like: Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden; have adapted aspects of the "Led Zeppelin" sound.
