History

Punk Rock was developed in the mid 1970's in the United Skates, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Punk bands created fast, hard-edged music, and the songs were usually shorter and stripped down to the bare essentials. The music was played using fast power chord progressions and the lyrics often focused on anti-establishment. Punk was the first indie genre because they often recorded, produced, and distributed their music themselves through informal channels.

Bands like the Ramones, in New York, and the Sex Pistols and the Clash, in London, are acknowledged as the pioneers of punk and they created a new musical movement. Punk became a huge cultural phenomenon however it was rejected from the mainstream pushing the movement "underground". A punk sub culture emerged which was characterized by by distinctive styles of clothing and the adornment of anti-authoritarian ideologies.

The Ramones

The Ramones were formed in 1974, in New York City, by John Cummings (Johnny Ramone) on lead guitar, Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone) on lead vocals and bass guitar, and Jeffry Hyman (Joey Ramone) on drums. Dee Dee realized that he could not sing and play bass at the same time so he gave the task of singing to Joey. Joey then realized that he could not sing and play the drums at the same time so they added Thomas Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone) to the line up as the drummer of the group and Joey took the lead vocal slot. They are often cited as the first punk rock band and even though they achieved limited commercial success, the Ramones were a major influence on the punk rock movement in the U.S and the U.K. They performed 2,263 concerts and toured continuously for 22 years in their time as a band but they disbanded in 1996. By a little more than 8 years, the bands three founding members: Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, and Dee Dee Ramone had died.
